Horror films often deal with our  nightmare’s, hidden fears, revulsions and  the terror of the unknown. The plot of the horror movies often involves the presence of an evil force or some supernatural elements in the life of a person and to be more specific the horror elements of a movie mostly consist of some ghosts,witches,aliens,zombies or cannibals.There have been some really well directed and extremely well shot hollywood horror films which have left us with many sleepless nights wondering if we are being watched by an evil force or something like that.So here is the list of such movies.

10) THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

 The film is based on the novel by Thomas Harris,it is a story of a serial killer who is terrorizing the Midwest and in an effort to catch him, the FBI sends agent Clarice Darling to interview a prisoner, psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, who agrees to give insight into the mind of the on-the-loose criminal and the scariest thing is that he gets in the mind.

9) NIGHTMARE ON ELM  STREET

The movie is about a group of teenagers who are being terrorized by “Freddy Krueger”.He is an evil being from another world who gets to his victims by entering their dreams and killing them with gloves that have knife blades attached to each finger.And the most peculiar feature in the storyline is that all of this started on “Friday the 13th” ,which is considered to be the most evil day.

8) THE RING

The Ring is a masterpiece of fear and atmospheric terror.The story starts with a man watching a video in which a ghostly figure in white, long black hair pulled witchily over her face, crawls like nothing human out of a well and then just keeps coming, out of his TV and into the real world this rumour is spreading just like wildfire among teenagers that whoever watches the video dies after seven days and this is how the story goes like.

7) ALIEN

Alein is a science fiction horror film about a menacing, unstoppable  Demon beast.The story is about a commercial crew aboard space in a towing vessel, Nostromo and when it is on its way home when they pick an SOS warning from a distant planet. What they don’t know is that the SOS warning is not like any other ordinary warning call. Picking up the signal, the crew realize that they are not alone on the spaceship when a alien stowaway is on the cargo ship.

6)WRONG TURN

The story revolves around a group of friends who decide to go snowmobiling during their winter break. They make a “wrong turn”, getting lost in a storm, and seek shelter in an abandoned sanatorium. They are completely isolated. But the sanatorium has a troubled past, and some of its former patients still reside there and it is the home for deformed canibals. In this deadly game, the college kids must fight to survive the night.

5) SAW

The movie starts with a dead body lying between the two men, and they wake up in the secure lair of a serial killer who’s been nicknamed “Jigsaw”. The men must follow various rules and objectives if they wish to survive and win the deadly game set for them.The film was given a small budget and shot on a short schedule of 18 days.

4) THE GRUDGE

The Grudge is the remake of the Japanese film Ju-on.The movie describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage or extreme sorrow. The curse is an entity created where the person died. Those who encounter this evil supernatural force die and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passed from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. 

3) HALLOWEEN

The story of the movie is that of a six year-old Michael Myers,who seems like such a nice boy until he stabs his teenage sister to death on Halloween night. After fifteen years of been locked up in a mental institution, Michael escapes from there and heads a creepy mask and launches a killing period of time in his home town of Haddonfield. Only the boy’s psychiatrist Dr. Loomis and beautiful young Laurie Strode stand in the way of an indestructible psychopath with supernatural strength and an unquenchable thirst for blood.This movie will surely leave you paranoid for a long period of time.

2) THE SHINING

The Shining is a psychological horror film based on Stephen King’s novel “The Shining” although their are certain changes made in the movie.The story starts when a family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.

1) THE EXORCIST

The exorcist is a supernatural horror film adapted from William Peter’s novel “The Exorcist”.The story is of a young girl,  Regan who at first just seems ill. But when she begins to levitate and speak in dead tongues, her parents are forced to call in a team of priests to do battle with an evil force .
