10 Tips to Stop Ragging in Schools & Colleges

10 Tips to Stop Ragging in Schools & Colleges

When asked by students what ragging is ? The following were the answers I got.
Final year student:-“It’s just a way to know our juniors how they react over overwhelming situations.. After all we are their seniors, it’s our duty to prepare them for worst in a best way.”
First year student:-“It’s way how our seniors show their superiority to us even if it takes our lives away from us..After all we are their juniors, it’s in our stride to feel worst in the best possible way.”
I found there was difference between definition of same word and to my wits this difference was substantial. Over the years every possible way is being devised, developed, discussed and implemented just to mitigate this difference to get subtle.
Following are the 10 tips which I think can work on to diminish the gap between the 2 definitions.

10. ANTI RAGGING TEAMS :-
Teams constituting students from different grades/years can volunteer in anti ragging campaigns from making posters to talking to students on individual basis. Even staff members can vitalize the team by their leadership.

9. WEEKLY REVIEWS & COUNSELLING SESSIONS:-

Apart from regular lectures students can be provided break with teachers where latter can discuss and counsel the former about the ways to tackle hard situations, if they face any. Reviews can be conducted on weekly or monthly basis as per requirement to know about mental health of fresher students.

8. IDENTIFY THE RAGGING PRONE ZONES:-
Certainly seniors always find some safe places where they could have fun with their juniors which they call ragging. These places need to be identified and guarded so as to avoid any such case of censure against freshers/juniors.

7. UNDERTAKING TO BE TAKEN FROM SENIOR STUDENTS & THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIAN:-
An affidavit or stamp of approval can be taken from the students to assure that if they involve in such activities then they are liable to be debarred from the institution with a remark of indulgence in unfair practices of ragging on their migration certificates. Doing this would cultivate a fear in minds of student to avoid messing with their future on cost of mere fun.

6. UNDERTAKING TO BE TAKEN FROM FRESHER STUDENTS & THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIAN:-
Seeking the scenario of nobody being innocent , a fresher being enrolled should also provide a printed undertaking of his/her not being involved in such ragging acts else they would be liable for the aftermath.

5. CCTV SURVEILLANCE:-

The college/school premises could be covered by CCTV’s so as to have a close observation of the ongoing activities. Doing this would not only help in securing students from supremacy attacks, the security of entire institution can also be improved indeed.

4. STRINGENT PUNISHMENTS AGAINST RAGGING CULPRITS :-
The culprits once found guilty should be held inflexibly and given such stiff punishment that an examplar could be established for the sake of betterment of both races:-the weak and the strong or say the juniors and the seniors. This could help fourfold:-
• Culprit got his fair share.
• Innocent got justice and hope to survive.
• Weaker race got a lesson not to succumb & raise voice against injustice.
• Stronger race got warning that “fun can make u pay tons”.

3. SENIOR-JUNIOR HEALTHY INTERACTIONS:-
Often senior grade students claim that lack of ragging results in juniors neglecting them, even disrespecting them and then why they should help juniors. Not all seniors attack freshers by ragging & a formal introduction cannot bring them on friendly alliance at once, so a step to bridge the gap between these two grades is necessary. A formal fresher party could be organized on institution level to introduce the seniors and juniors. The ambiance of occasion would not let any junior take his senior as a devil and likewise seniors won’t treat their juniors as a prey.

2. MOCK DRILL:-
A street play or drama depicting the outcomes of ragging can be exhibited to make every student realize the long term effects of ragging which they overlook or do not perceive when they indulge in such acts. The more the effects of ragging are actualized in play , the more people know about the pain of a victim. Though the scars of victimization may not be physically visible but they do leave a deep and permanent mark on mind of a poor. The target may be demoralized to an extent that leads to his alienation from rest of the world. All these agonies & unseen injuries , when get the voice of actors and the reality of play may provoke a gush of humanity through the students & thus make them follow a road to peace.

1.SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILMS:-

1
Our media being aware of such practices has flooded the internet with lot of documentary films over ragging. These films can be shown to students and can dig deep into their hearts to trigger the emotions of humanity ON. The film “Table No. 21” was based on this issue and depicted the adverse effects of ragging so aptly. Not only such films that are directly available on internet can help but certain active students can themselves make such documentary films to unveil the reality.

CONCLUSION:-
To conclude, I have just few words to focus on,,
