10 Mid-night Snacks You Can’t Resist


Mid-night snacks- the term itself have a tantalizing feel to it. As children, the idea of a mid-night snack was mysterious and exciting. As adults, late night snacking is all about indulgence- as when you are tempted, necessity- work keeping you up late at night or fulfilling your hunger pangs, means of comfort- food for comfort when you feel down. Late night snacking is generally considered an unhealthy habit. But not all mid-night snacks are unhealthy, it’s all about choices. It’s up to you to be responsible and go for healthy ones or be reckless once in a while and indulge into the irresistible ones.

There are numerous reasons why some days you need to make a trip to the kitchen and open the fridge long after everyone around you are happily tugged in under the sheets- sitting up late to study for the upcoming killer exam, your favourite movie playing on your favourite channel, caught up in a football match your favourite club is playing in, can’t seem to be falling asleep because you are worried or depressed about something or you just woke up with a hunger pang.

For whichever reason you are up late at night looking for something to eat, there are all sorts of snacks to choose from, to go with your mood. Here are 10 mid-night snacks you can’t resist-

10)          Cookies and brownies-

There are varieties to choose from- healthy oatmeal cookies, soft chocolate brownies, nutty chocolate chip cookies or leftover home-made ones. Cookies and brownies are typical mid-night snacks. They are tasty and filling but not too filling which is just right for a mid-night snack. Stock your fridge with your favorite ones, make sure they are there when you need them. Enjoy them with a glass of milk- it will lull you back to sleep on top of providing nutrition to your body. So if you’re snacking because you couldn’t fall asleep, this is your choice of snack.

No one says no to crisp French fries and crunchy chips. This might be not be a healthy choice of snack but some days you just feel like French fries and chips. And on those days no amount of lecture on junk food or weight watch can stop you from reaching out for those bags of crunchies. Also they are a favourite choice of snacks when you have drives to have something salty. So tug into the bags and satisfy that pang. You can throw in a cup of yoghurt  or drink a glass of good old water later to avoid feeling too guilty.

Smoothies and shakes especially milkshakes are nutritious and popular choice of mid-night snacks. They look great and delicious and are also a healthy quick fix to your hunger drives. You could just throw in all the juiciest and nicest fruits of your choice, put some essentials like milk and the blender will do the rest of the job. Put some ice cubes for a chill feel. You can make it exciting by making an actual midnight shake or smoothie that actually have a mid-night colour.

7)            Sandwich and toast-

Munch on some buttery crisp brown toast or make a vegetable or non-veg sandwich with the meat of your choice. Keep it simple; remember you’re having a midnight snack. You could just spread some mayonnaise on top the spread, put in some crisp lettuce and add some cheese. If you’re preparing a non-veg one, go for turkey or chicken. Avoid heavy meats like beef or pork. You don’t want to wake up with a food hangover in the morning.

Nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashews, peanuts, pistachios and dates are packed with nutrition. They are good source of protein. The protein will help you keep awake. So if you’re studying for an exam and you are trying to keep awake, then nuts are your best option. Another reason nuts are best choice of snack during and before exams is that they help in stress reduction and are good for brain health. They are also good for keeping a check on bad cholesterol and for weight maintenance.

Leftover pizza is quite interesting to go with late night movies but driving after midnight to the nearest all time pizza corner is another thing. You’ll enjoy it. Most nights you sleep but you don’t remember those nights. Sneaking out at the death of the night, driving into the night air all by yourself when everybody else is asleep is what you’re going to remember someday. If you’re actually going to do that, have fun. If you’re going to make do with the leftover one after all, sprinkle some fresh shredded cheese on top of your slice, it will make a big difference.

You can go for either vegetable or fruit salad. And neither has to be boring. Fruits are the best snacks for any time of the day as well as night. Pick the season’s best fruits. Mixed strawberries, apples, peaches, plums, cherries and grapes. Enjoy this healthy mix with a low fat cream of your choice. You can also have a frozen fruit salad. Frozen bananas can be as good as ice-cream. Vegetable salads can be interesting too. Make a crunchy vegetable salad with lettuce and other vegetables of your choice, mixed in some leftover turkey pieces and some olive oil. A yummy dip will complete your mix.

If you’re staying up late watching a favorite movie, popcorn is your perfect choice of snack to complete the late-night movie feel. It takes just a few minutes to prepare and it’s something you can eat without paying much attention to or worry about staining your clothes and the sofa. You can keep it healthy by eating it plain. But if you’re willing to indulge, go for one dripping with butter, sprinkle some shredded cheese and you’re equipped to enjoy your movie. Popcorn can drive away hunger pangs and is also a popular mid-night snack for when you have a something-salty drive.

None can resist gorgeously delicious scoops of ice-creams or mouth watering slices of soft cakes. Ice-creams and cakes are popular mid-night snacks and such cliché comfort foods. Even more pleasant that they are available in so many different flavours to satisfy everyone’s personal choice. The reason that people turn to ice-creams and cakes when depressed is that carbs and sugar in them increases level of serotonin and elevates mood. But these comfort foods should be indulged with care as they can increase risk of heart disease and do havoc to your weight watch.

Chocolates are your best friends if you’re feeling down. They are known to lift moods. Remember even Harry Potter eat chocolates after a dementor attack! Chocolates stimulate release of endorphins-happy hormones. Dark chocolates satiate hunger and also induce good sleep. So if you are feeling depressed and couldn’t fall asleep, bite into a nice bar of chocolate or make a mug of steamy hot chocolate and snuggle inside the blankets. Plug in your ears to your favourite music and drown out the rest of the world. You’ll surely feel better and fall asleep.
