10 Animals that can Survive in Extremely Cold Weather


It is so hard for human beings to live in extremely cold weather. Can you imagine stepping out in snowy and chilling winters without your winter clothes? I am sure you will not dare do it. There are many animals who survive in extremely cold weather without the need of winter clothes. Let’s read on about the animals that can easily live in countries like Antarctica and arctic.

Ringed seal is also famous by the name jar seal and belongs to the category of earless seals. These tiny pinnipeds are not even five feet long. They are the most commonly found seals in the entire arctic. They survive by feeding on arctic and polar cod as well as on planktonic crustaceans. They have got their name from the light coloured rings on their body. They spent most of their time near the shore ice. They can make a dive of around 90 meters and remain submerged in the water for more than 45 minutes.

Narwhals are mainly found in North-eastern Canada and Greenland. An average narwhals is about 12 foot long and weighs around 2000 pound. They survive on Arctic cods, halibut and squids. To survive the extreme pressure conditions in the deep icy water, narwhals have flexible rib cage which can expand and contract according to the pressure. They are distinguished from others of their kind by the huge tusks emerging from their upper jaws.

Walrus have adaptions which help them to survive the extreme conditions of the North Pole. They are provided with a six inch thick layer of blubber which protects them from the chilly cold as it helps to keep in the body heat. To find their food they have vibrissae through which they can easily sense calms and different kinds of bivalves buried inside the thick ice. They can make a dive of 100 meter depth and can remain submerged for around 30 minutes in the water. Their rare flippers apart from helping them in swimming also help them to walk on the land. Walrus have two large tusks which help them to haul themselves out of the water and protect themselves against the enemy.

These 6 feet long seals are born with fluffy white coat and weighs around 400 pounds. They are normally found in Arctic as well as northern Atlantic Ocean. Harp seals do not spend much time on land and are mainly found in cold waters. They mainly survive on krill, fish and squids. They have sharp teeth which prevent them from predators. Due to the strong flippers, they travel deep down the oceans in search of their food and to escape from their predators. They keep themselves warm in such a cold weather due to presence of a thick fat beneath their furry coat.

Belonging to the category of whales, Orcinus Orca has an average weight of 8000 kg and measures up to 1o meter. Orcinus Orca have extra body fat which help them to survive in the cold waters. They are black on the top and have white coloured skin on the underside. They are social animals and are mainly found in groups.

They have a high percentage of blubber which helps them to survive in the cold water of Arctic region. Their sensing capability is developed and they have echolocation which helps them to find blowholes in ice sheets. They travel in groups of tens but can even gather in groups of hundreds during the summer season.

They have dense fur on their body which protects them from the cold climatic condition.

They are medium sized with average length of 15 inches. Their body is grey coloured and they are distinguished by a bright red coloured beak. Their main preys include small fishes and invertebrates.

To minimize the heat escape from the body their body shape is rounded and their average length is around 33.6 inches. They generally eat voles, fishes, seabirds and lemmings.
